Healthcare Facilities
Argentina is like America, whereby you need private medical
insurance, although there are public hospitals and doctors.

Here in Mar del Plata, you have many private companies to choose
from.

OSDE is the most expensive (equivalent to Bupa) and
Thema is less expensive (equivalent to PPP)

OSDE costs approx. 150 pounds per month for a family of five.  This
covers everything.

Thema costs approx. 90 pounds per month for a family of five.  This is
the top plan and covers everything.

The difference between the two, is that the cheaper company makes a
small charge for each new medical problem (£2.50), but you only pay
this on the initial visit and it doesn't matter how many visits you need
to complete your treatment.  The same goes for the dentist, you pay
£2.50 for your initial appointment only

It was easy to take out medical insurance with Thema and each family
member carry their own card for any emergency.  Fortunately, we have
only used the clinic once, and we found the service first class. Once
you see your doctor, if you need blood tests and x-rays, everything is
done in the same building after seeing your doctor.  You also make
your follow-up appointment to get the results.

A visit to a totally private doctors costs £6 and you get a thorough
check-up.  A private orthodontist is about £7.00.  A private eye check is
£6.

I read on the internet that many Americans are now coming to
Argentina for medical treatment and medicine as it is so much
cheaper. Argentina is also up to date with equipment and skills, as
many doctors study abroad.

By being long to a private medical company, you get a discount of
between 30-50% on medicine, depending on which pharmacy you
use.  This is important because medicines are very expensive because
you pay the full price here with no government subsidiary.  Saying
that, it is still cheaper than the UK.

In the summer season, the local authority set-up a large and very
modern mobile hospital near the main beaches.  This allows immediate
treatment for anybody taken ill on the beach or in the town and it is
totally free!
